ASHE/NTCC Healthcare Facility Technician Program
ASHE is collaborating with the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) to launch a Healthcare Facility Technician Program by late 2025/early 2026. This comprehensive program includes a four-month classroom component and a six-month externship, offering certifications such as:
- Certified Healthcare Physical Environment Worker
- Mechanic Evaluation and Certification for Healthcare (MECH)
- Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel and more.
*Host chapters, instructors, community colleges, and hospital partners are needed to implement the program. Please contact SMSHE for more information.
ICC Update
During the October ICC Code Action Hearings, several key proposals were discussed:
- Approval of the “Definition of Clinical Need” to enhance safety and security in healthcare settings.
- Progress on issues like handwashing station water temperature, with further public comment hearings scheduled for 2026.

ASHRAE Update
Key developments include:
- ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170: Revised definitions, room unit allowances, and air change rate provisions are under public review until January 27, 2025.
- ASHRAE/ASHE Guideline 43: A third public review for substantive changes is open until January 6, 2025.

Sustainability and Decarbonization
ASHE is actively promoting sustainability and decarbonization initiatives:
- AMC Sustainability Interest Group: A collaborative effort with over 435 members focusing on climate action in academic medical centers. Upcoming events include discussions on healthcare and climate crisis response.
- 2025 Sustainability Task Forces: Volunteers are being sought for task forces focusing on sustainability in Reliability Centered Maintenance, Innovation, and a third area in development.
- ASHE/EPA ENERGY STAR Pro Bono Verification Program: This collaboration connects ASHE Licensed Professionals with healthcare facilities aiming for ENERGY STAR certification. Members are encouraged to volunteer or refer eligible hospitals, please let us know if you are interested.
