PRESENTATION:
Waste Management in the Healthcare Setting
Synopsis:
As a result of numerous historical environmental tragedies that resulted from the improper disposal of hazardous waste, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed comprehensive and often confusing regulations for the proper handling and management of waste. Healthcare establishments are not exempt and must know and understand the waste it generates, and ensure proper disposal.
This event will help SMSHE members achieve the following:
- Learn how to characterize waste generated by your facilities, especially your hazardous waste. Hazardous waste from healthcare facilities could include spent concentrated cleaning chemicals, radioactive waste, spent flammable hand sanitizers, etc.
- Identify your hazardous waste generator status and understand the requirements for each. This includes waste container labeling, storage area inspections, development of contingency plans, training, and hazmat shipping regulations.
- Understand how to manage other types of waste, including fluorescent bulbs, spent batteries, biohazardous waste, and non-hazardous waste.
- Review common hazardous waste violations to ensure you address these at your facilities before you receive a visit from a regulator.
